Indoor Environmental Quality Awareness
Covering Up Those Nasty Odors
Growing up, that was the solution. Something smelt bad, we were taught to spray it with a fragrance. Then the fragrance market got smart and added disinfectants. So, we bought fragrant disinfectants and sprayed the nasty smell till it went away. And, when it returned, we knew it was time to spray it again.
Indoor Environmental Professionals are spreading the word: Don’t ignore that odor or cover it up. Odors are our best indicator of a real problem. Mold, bacteria, the wrong mix of products or chemicals, smoke, gas leaks, sewer leaks, rodent infestations, improper air circulation . . . are just a few of the culprits behind odors. The odors indicate a deeper issue. Rather than covering up the odor, eliminate the source. Ultimately, eliminating the source yields a healthier environment.
A simple example: Mrs. K complained of an intermittent foul odor that gave her headaches while she worked in her shop. Upon investigation, we removed all the chemicals from under her utility sink and placed them on the back porch. She stopped having headaches. She was unaware that the product containers release vapors. The use of equipment in her shop circulated the air releasing the vapors into her work area, causing the odor and the headaches.
“I can highly recommend Baxter Group. Their work is top notch and the employees do everything they can to get the job done to your satisfaction. My first experience was when my church used them to check out our facility for asbestos and other contaminants. We were getting ready to install a new air conditioning system in our meeting hall. They sent in a team to test for mold and asbestos. After an intensive visual inspection of the facility they set up they testing equipment and left it to monitor the air quality. After all the results were in they presented us with detailed results of the findings with suggestions on how to remedy any problems that were found. The crew they sent to do the asbestos remediation made sure we knew what areas they would be working in and what they intended to do. They worked efficiently and completed the job without any disruption or delay.
After my wife and I were both very sick recently I suspected that there may be a problem with mold or allergens in the air in our home. Jocelyne came and visually inspected our home from the basement to the attic and even in the garages. After not finding anything visibly wrong she set up the air quality sensor. After 24 hours in our family room it was moved to our bedroom. Fortunately all the reading came back okay. She did suggest we put an air purifier in our bedroom. It has carpet and we have two cats which tend to shed quite a bit at times. She loaned us a brand new unit to try out and see if it helped any. I must admit that after two weeks I was not sure if it was making any difference. We had some friends coming to visit who are allergic to cats so two days before they were to arrive I moved the air purifier to he family room where we would be entertaining them. The next day when I entered the bedroom I could tell the difference. The room now had kind of musty smell. During our friends visits no mention was made of any strange smells or problems in the family room.
Long story short if you have or suspect you have any air quality problems Jocelyne and the Baxter Group are the ones to call. Now they are also doing home remodeling and I am sure they are just as great at that.”
